The small step ladder might break under my weight as I used it to climb on to my desk just as the attic ladder had collapsed under me a few months ago. I might even get my foot trapped within the ladder like a neighbour whose foot was nearly amputated by her own metal ladder,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. She retained her foot by holding it in place until help arrived but has had endless problems and pain for years as a result of this one unfortunate accident.

European leaders have welcomed Ireland's request for a bailout package from the European Union and the International Monetary Fund,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. The Irish government applied for the bailout Sunday to help salvage its economy,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Spain's Foreign Affairs Minister Trinidad Jimenez said Monday that Ireland's decision to accept a bailout is good news. She said European Union solidarity has worked and the euro will be stable once again because of the help of all the countries within the European Union,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
The Irish government had denied for weeks that it would need a rescue package to help salvage its economy. But after an emergency meeting Sunday night, the country's Taoiseach, or prime minister,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], said Ireland had requested financial help.
The total amount has yet to be agreed, but it's estimated to be worth around $100 billion -- slightly less than a similar package loaned to Greece earlier this year.
Austrian Foreign Affairs Minister Michael Spindelegger said the bailout would stop contagion spreading to other weak economies within the euro zone,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"If you have a look at the euro and the stability of the euro of course this was the right way to proceed,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Spindelegger said.

So really what we're doing is transferring the debt from the people who lent to the banks to the Irish tax payer and that's really not fair and it's really very bad for the Irish economy."

While the country is awash in talks about the general election and its aftermath, another important national matter is underway. Yi So-yeon is currently lodged at the International Space Station, and the first phase of the manufacturing of the Korea Space Launcher Vehicle-1 (KSLV-1) is nearing completion in Moscow.
On the day the Russian rocket with Yi aboard was launched, a TV station aired related programs for over 10 hours. The space flight hardly warrants that much attention. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) classified her as not "a space woman" but "a spaceflight participant under a commercial contract." In other words, she is a tourist who is visiting a space station owned by the U.S., Russia,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the European Union and Japan. She is a tourist from the 36th country into space,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], at that.
The experiments Yi is conducting in space being primary, it's not entirely wrong to contend that the government is using W26 billion (US$1=W987) in taxpayers' money for an individual's space tour. What is urgently needed for us at the moment is not a manned space flight but rocket engine technology. Yi's stay in space is not something we've achieved, but a warning that the time has come for South Korea to decide whether we should focus our national strength on going to space or end up imitating others like this.
The KSLV-1 is scheduled to be launched from Oinarodo Space Center in South Jeolla Province at year's end at a cost of over W500 billion. A plan to launch a much heavier spacecraft with a rocket completely manufactured in South Korea about 10 years later is estimated to cost more than W4 trillion. There is no guarantee whatsoever that even with that much spending we will be able to somewhat catch up with the U.S., Russia, China,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Japan and the EU.
The term "technology transfer" does not exist in the space industry. Russia is building our rocket together and has sent Yi So-yeon to the space station. No investment in space would be riskier than one under such circumstances.
An investment in a space project is bigger and more uncertain than the proposed Grand Canal Project. Once built, a canal, whether it is economically feasible or not, will remain. South Korea plans to take part, but without any accompanying technology we will pay money and gain nothing of substance. Deciding whether to participate in the lunar base project or not is really not an easy matter.

But world history has become the stage of the Westerners who sailed westward aboard ships unconditionally 500 years ago. If you explore untrodden routes, you may eventually open a new world,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], though you might well sustain injuries on the way. This experience is inherited in the DNA of the offspring of the world powers.
A calculation of the economic benefits of an investment in the space industry would be important. China plans to build a lunar base on its own and Japan dreams of developing a deep space base four times farther than the moon. Now Toyota is suffering an unprecedented crisis following its massive recall in the U.S. over defective parts. President Akio Toyoda,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the grandson of the company's founder,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], was grilled by U.S. lawmakers for more than three hours at a Congressional hearing on Wednesday. "I deeply regret that I caused concern among so many people," Toyoda said. Toyota's crisis is not solely due to quality and safety problems. American cars have also had problems with defective parts. The Congressional probe of Toyota is unprecedented.

Creating an ASK environment and giving yourself and others permission to ASK is an important step in creating the space for team members (and leaders) to step out of their comfort zone. The environment must be safe to ASK.
The third was the fear of being perceived as incapable, unable to do the job,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or weak. Fear and not knowing were at the root of their inability to ASK. This was a high performing team; imagine the results if they stepped out of their comfort zone to ASK…their results would be incredible!
ASKing is uncomfortable for most of us but we need to be willing to go outside our comfort zone to receive what we need. We also need to be open to helping others overcome their discomfort and find their voice to ASK. By being willing to ASK we can set an example for others to do the same. By being approachable, we can give others the opportunities they need to ASK for themselves.
Take Mike’s situation. He is the leader of a pretty effective team. This team has energy,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], passion and is meeting deadlines at warp speed. However, this team tends to work in isolation from one another. When they have sat back and pinpointed where the pinch points are, many have led back to not ASKing (for help, clarification, feedback, time and resources). What has been preventing the team members ASKing for help? The first response was,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], “We didn’t know that we could (ask for help).” The pace of the work and the environment they worked in didn’t really model asking one another for assistance. Their leader Mike rarely ASKed for help, so some felt that there was an unwritten rule about ASKing,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and avoided it.

Bob had a similar attitude and belief system as Sally. He identified enough “problems” to fill a sheet of flip chart paper during a facilitated brainstorming session on how to build a healthier work culture. Bob’s common response to many questions was,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], “Same s---,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], different day.” I watched the energy drain from his colleagues’ faces every time he made that statement,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but Bob was completely unaware of the impact his words had on those around him. He looked at problems, not possibilities. He was so caught up in what was wrong, broken or not working to consider what it could be like. Bob’s way of being prevented people from ASKing him, too.
The second reason the ASK was avoided stemmed from a fear of what others would think.
Making an ASK (defined as a request) may not change your team, business,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or life exponentially, but not ASKing will ensure the status quo remains. Making a request or an ASK can have a significant difference in the quality of your business, team,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or life and help you quickly achieve what you need.
Sally expected her supervisor to be a mind-reader. How sad! Sally had missed these opportunities and was now miserable at work. The more I spoke to Sally,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the more I learned that this pattern was prevalent in her life. She expected her spouse to “just know” what she needed or felt, and was constantly disappointed when her expectations were not met. Sally had become bitter and blamed the company and her supervisor for not promoting her, but took no responsibility for changing her situation, or for letting her employer know her needs and goals. In fact, she didn’t even mention her goals during her performance reviews. It was almost as though she “tested” her supervisor to see if she could figure it out. How different Sally’s life and business may have been if she had dabbled her foot over that discomfort line in the sand, and let people know her goals and ASKed for opportunities to grow with the organization.
Let’s talk about Sally, a long term employee in public service who has held the same position for many years. Although she wanted to move up the corporate ladder,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], she shared that she was now just “putting in time”. I was curious to what happened to her goal. Sally responded with a simple statement: “I never got a promotion!”
Jane worked for an educational institution that placed high value on innovation, engagement and learning - not just for students, but also for staff. This environment seemed to invite employees to ASK. Sam had the opposite experience. He worked for a paramilitary organization that had a long way to go in creating an ASK environment. As a new employee, he recalled having lots to learn. His first few requests for mentoring and guidance were met with a white binder being placed in his hands accompanied by,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], “It’s in the manual. Read it!” Sam avoided ASKing for help for a long time.
Let’s be real for a moment. Doing an ASK in no way guarantees that your request will be met. However, one thing’s for certain. Not asking ensures that your request will not be met. As a professional in the business of helping individuals and teams exceed their potential and meet their needs, I am constantly reminded of how few people ask for what they need. And I am more surprised at how people sabotage the ASK the moment the words leave their mouth, or ask in a way that diminishes the importance of their request.
Sally looked at me as if I had three heads. She sighed and said, “Why should I have to tell her? She should know. I was here so long I was becoming part of the woodwork.”
Hesitant to ASK what was in my mind, I bit the bullet. “Did your supervisor know that you wanted to be promoted, to move up the corporate ladder?”
